Since the heavy industry left that place, its infrastructure was transformed into a heritage site and taken over by more benevolent, cultural industry. At the same time, large parts of the landscape were reclaimed by nature and have since been indwelled by pioneering vegetation and unique insects. Here is where a shepherd and his stock, truck drivers, botanists and geologists, local inhabitants and artists cross paths. In this context Ciel Grommen and Maximiliaan Royakkers propose both a physical and a figurative platform for dialogue and an opportunity for making new alliances between those unlikely neighbours. Le Paysage Ménagé is a proposal, an open invitation to imagine new ways of being in the landscape and making connections with and within it. The project coincides with JESTER’s move to the new location at C-mine, Genk, and it prefigures future developments on the site.&nbsp; How can we create architecture that inhabits a place instead of occupying or claiming it? How do we set a proverbial foot in the landscape without trampling it? And what if it has already been trampled?&nbsp;&nbsp;This idea of developing spaces for living together is reflected in the title of the project, which translates literally as ‘a household landscape’ or ‘a landscape taken care of’. Le Paysage Ménagé is a wordplay on the French expression for ‘constructed landscape’ (un paysage aménagé ) and inspired by the challenge formulated by French literary historian Marielle Macé, “to invent ways of living in this damaged world: neither to save (to safeguard, conserve, repair, return to old states) nor to survive, but to live, that is to say to try again, by cooperating with all kinds of living beings, and by favouring life… to imagine practices and to house them in the interstices of capitalism.”. Each household owes its character to the construction of the house but perhaps even more to its peculiar furnishing. Ciel Grommen and Maximiliaan Royakkers’ interventions have been imagined as a kind of ‘furniture’ for the landscape. To furnish a landscape means to create something provisional and flexible, to take a stance without planting a flag or claiming the territory. The first piece to furnish the C-mine site is a brick daybed– a unique meeting place where during the day meals and stories are shared and at nights animals and plants take over. Inspired by the Chinese ‘kang’ bed and the Russian ‘pechka’ stove, the platform can be heated up from the inside, emanating warmth and aura of hospitality. The material used to construct this platform takes its roots in the local history; as the only mining site in Genk, Winterslag operated a brickyard, where the residue of the mining process was transformed into building material for the rapidly expanding residential districts. Still today, the characteristic black-charred bricks, known as Winterslagse Duivels (‘the devils of Winterslag’), clad the facades all over the neighbourhood. With the support of passionate experts and amateurs, Grommen and Royakkers have developed a parallel brick-making technique, using the so-called ‘minestone’ – a mixture of sand, clay, and water, present in the ground and officially considered ‘waste material’. Those bricks are hand-formed, air-dried, and fired on-site, in a temporary field oven. With every baking cycle, this low-tech oven is assembled and disassembled again. Every step in this slow production process takes place in the public space. The baking cycles become an opportunity to experiment, to exchange knowledge, and to engage in conversations about the local landscape with the visitors, neighbours, fellow artists, andpassers-by. and presented during Openbare Werken Festival 2025 How and what do we fire, with whom do we share the resulting warmth ? With Clémentine Vaultier and Maximiliaan Royakkers, we research how oven infrastructures can transform not only matter, but also our relationships to communities and territories. We do this by visiting ovens and&nbsp; bakers, taking with us an ever growing atlas with archival images. Companionships is a chapter of our atlas that&nbsp; focuses on bread ovens, sharing and celebrating baking practices with archival images, bread tokens, and crocodile bread.Crocodile bread artistic catering throughout the festival by Wetterse bakkerLooking for bakers, we discovered the beautiful shop of Wetterse Bakker, acting like a small exhibition of the art of baking. Behind the counter, we found Mahmout, a generous person and dedicated craftsman. One of his specialties is the surprise bread. Thanks to an exchange about different animal bread rituals, we can find around the world, he reworked his model for the city festival into a super deluxe and extra-large edition. Finally its crocodile and crab breads spread throughout the events and brightened up communal picnic moments, while a chapter of the Atlas of Ovens was on display in his bakery on Sint-Salvatorstraat. Bakkers op grote schaal Vooruit lecture in the bakery schoolThe arts centre VierNulVier is located in the people palace of Vooruit. This cooperative, that has defined the base of the current socialist movement, actually once started as a cooperative bakkery.&nbsp; May 15, 2025, we invited bakers and others for a collective visit to the bakery school of Ghent, accompanied by historian Peter Scholliers, who provided us with insights into the pioneering role that the&nbsp; cooperative Vooruit played in the industrialization of the baking industry in Belgium. The talk started by loading the oven with four breads, dressed with “patacons” made of former Vooruit bread tokens. Many bakers, including teachers, shared their view on the history of bread production. The talk ended by unloading the oven and sharing the bread amongst all participants. After All, We Are Daily Companions,a bread ovens libretto in Smorbrod bakeryIn Smorbrod bakery, customers are welcomed by two enormous bread ovens: an electric steam oven and a stone wood oven staring ahead, one still operational, the other a reminder of a previous venture.&nbsp; Through a projection, these silent infrastructures came to life and engaged in conversation with each other. They reflected on the art of baking from the past and present, on technology and craftsmanship, convenience and romance, in short, small infrastructural stories that are hidden in this bakery.&nbsp; loosely-fixed collective or artists, designers and social scientists, focusing on different forms of seasonality and cohabitation. the freeports of Geneva, the city in which I was doing a master in fine arts in 2014-2015. A free port is a bonded zone under customs control to store goods in transit. The ‘free’ aspect of free ports refers to the suspension of customs duties and taxes until the moment the goods reach their final destination. Mostly free ports are found in border areas, harbors or airports, but in Geneva you can find one in a general industrial zone. The free ports and warehouses of Geneva have made media headlines, since it is increasingly used as a permanent home for investment goods such as heritage objects or artworks. (It is said to house more artworks than the Louvre in Paris.)Freeports and Warehouses, an observatory When reading about the global art market things are described as conceptual, obscure, ungraspable and anonymous. I wondered what the importance of place was in this debate, and decided to look very carefully to the functioning of the freeport in La Praille (Geneva). The website explaines that here millions of valuable art pieces are kept in boxes, so that they are safeguarded for transportation and "the velocity of the art market". I managed to rent a container and organise a site-specific installation. Interestingly I was actually reflecting on a phenomenon that intends to be as site-un-specific as possible. Therefore I made fluid furniture : a box that can be transformed into a bench, a closet, a pedestal, ... all elements useful for a pop-up exhibition. I also added a variation of the emergency map, to narrate about the physical features and historical evolutions of the place. Freeports and Warehouses, a guided tour By renting a container in the Swiss zone of the site, I had a reason to hang around. I became friends with the secretary, the handyman and the dog of the customs agent. I collected rumours and observed the activities taking place. It consists of a gigantic map covering the whole county of Geneva, where some precise areas are carefully cut out. The map is mirrored by a fence structure in the form of a cross. Four assistants dressed in black walk towards the structure, close it and open it again in the form of a square. It looks like a sleight. What does factory work mean today, and what are the prospects? During a year of residing, meeting, exchanging and exhibiting in the factory, we witnessed a place in full transformation: from the production of mechanical gearboxes in half-automated production lines with Toyotan principles, to the production of electric gearboxes on full automated productions line according to German standards. A "wave" of white paint is erasing all dirt, colours and traces from the past, convincingly producing an image of a succesfull factory adept to global stardards. Feelings of nostalgia, commemoration, reflection or critique, coming from its employees —often working for more than 10 years in this company— are not allowed. All that matters is surviving and optimistically advancing in the very competitive, neoliberal and global automotive market. Confronted by what it means to inhabit this factory and its imposed regime on a daily basis, we proposed to produce "Météore". Etymologically, météore refers to a luminous celestial phenomenon, but in Stellantis it is mainly known as the name for a series of ubiquitous convector machines by PSE. By assembling elements of some of its discarded exemplars, we have built a “machine to inhabit" (or "machine à habiter”). Installed like a Trojan horse in the production hall, traversing different production units, it offers a small meeting space where the machine noise is smothered and the lights dimmed. Instead of wiping out memories and imposing strict protocols, its use remains quite undefined,&nbsp;open for different appropriations. Its shelfs&nbsp;host a growing collection of artist books. During our residencies in a new unit (UPT) we continue to work on new artefacts of factory work in close dialogue with its employees. While sharing a coffee, we complete graphs and tables, read literature excerpts and discuss experiences and stories of contemporary factory work, hoping to continue to document a fascinating space 1953, the Korean Peninsula is divided into North and South by a particular border. This border takes the form of a 4 km wide strip across the peninsula and is called the ‘demilitarized zone’. Along both sides of the line, large numbers of troops are stationed to defend their nation against them that once have been their brothers, but are now part of a hostile-other system. Except for a few touristic incursions and patrolling soldiers, the area has been a deadly place for humans. This isolation along the 249 km length of the DMZ has created an involuntary nature reserve inhabited by several endangered animals and plant species. Unsurprisingly, this unique wildlife refuge is gaining interest from all over the world. Inspired by other border regions and encouraged by international nature organizations, the South Korean government started to elaborate a plan to turn the DMZ into a transnational park for peace. Only ... up to now, they couldn’t overcome North Korea’s rejection that the park would exploit ‘the pain of national division’. I took this controversial idea as a starting point for my research. I encountered the massive administrative body that lies behind this physical border region and that envisions its possible transformations. Leaf-lets presents a reflection, which literally started from found administrative documents: reports, recommendations, and speeches; a diversity in fonts, titles, organizations—but at the end all presented on the same A4-format — a lot of paper. By physically cutting these documents, it becomes impossible to consult their very content. Or is the content rather rising out of the paper? The traces left in the documents remind us of the negative of a herbarium: a DMZ herbarium. Plants — settled — in paper.With Baegdudaegan, a&nbsp;map for a Korean Peace Park, I propose an alternative territory as a “transnational territory for peace and unification”. It does not cover the DMZ, but the Baekdudaegan mountain range running down the entire length of the Korean Peninsula.The drawing style refers to the famous calligraphic of the Joseong dynasty, the last dynasty of the united Korean people with ruins of the former capital in the actual DMZ. Parallel lines collaborate into mountains, without ever closing. We see how the stack is meticulously built up. How the heap is ignited,&nbsp; then smolderingly bakes off the stones, only to be broken down again. Various people and practices gather around the stone protagonist. Subtitles reflect on its environment, its content, its origins and peers, and finally its meaning. The film was created in the context of “Le Paysage Ménagé”, a project that offers an alternative discourse for the development of C-mine, a former coal mine site in Genk that is characterized by a special landscape quality, a polluted subsoil and a recovering ecosystem, hosting a fascinating variety of spatial practices by a large group of invisible actors (migrants, adventurers, place seekers, plants, animals, …). The project challenges to replace the logic of development, extraction and management of a landscape with an approach based on habitation, regeneration and establishing relationships. I published the letters, but still felt not everything was said.
